RAINWATER HARVESTING

Long-term drought continues to threaten western states with extended dry seasons and depletion of groundwater aquifers. Development and agriculture continue to put increased pressure on the planet’s water supply.

We use techniques developed in Africa, Australia, and other dry climates to capture what rain water is available and use it to recharge ground water systems, which creates resilience in the landscape and can even create microclimates where crops can be grown with minimal irrigation. This may include using roofs and swales to capture water, ponds and cisterns to store it , and various earthworks to recharge water into the ground.

This swale allows water to infiltrate into a large hugelkultur bed filled with dead roots and branches that will decay allowing water to soak deep into the soil.
